Twitter and Google Are Back In Bed With One Another (How You Can Optimize Your Tweets To Take Advantage)

A search on Google will now display relevant tweets from Twitter in addition to its other results, a move aimed at adding a real-time element to Google.

For businesses, though, it’s an opportunity to get content to show up organically in the search results, which can increase traffic from people who are SEARCHING for a solution to a problem your business solves.

Pretty cool, right?

There are a few simple things you can do to optimize your tweets and increase your chances of showing up in search (not to mention Twitter search) and have Twitter and Google working for you.

1. Know your keywords.

In order to optimize your profile and tweets for keywords, you have to have a list of keywords that you want to rank for.

It may sound obvious but many people don’t know where to start with this.

What keywords do you have in the meta data on your website?

What keywords do you have in your bio on your website and on Twitter?

While they may not translate perfectly to tweets, they’re definitely a good place to start.

After you come up with your initial set of keywords, you’ll need to expand your list.

Start by using hahstagify to find hashtags that people are using on Twitter that are related to your keywords. The Google keyword planner and are also good resources for expanding your list of keywords.

2. Include all your social profiles in search results.

Google allows you to place its markup code on your website so that your social profile information appears in the Google Knowledge Panel in some searches.

All you have to do is grab the code from the Developer’s site.

3. Start using keywords in your tweets.

While your tweet may not last in the search results as long as a website, it’s still an opportunity for free traffic.

You also will have many more chances to provide relevant content through your tweets.

Once you’ve started using your keywords in your tweets regularly, monitor your Twitter analytics to see what your audience is responding to best.

Once you’ve established what is working you can create more content around that topic.

Consider using Twitter cards to provide more information for users and help your content stand out from the other 140-character updates.

4. Optimize your profile.

It’s just a good idea, in general, to have your profile optimized for search.

While Google is, for now, just showing actual tweets, your profile should be optimized for Twitter search. Use the keywords you want to be found for in your Twitter bio, along with some personal information to make you more relatable on Twitter and Google for your prospects.

Include a link to something enticing like a lead magnet that Twitter users will WANT to click on.

It’s also important to use a name and username that matches your website and other online profiles.

If your Twitter handle has a bunch of numbers in it, that WILL impact whether or not you are ranked in Google.

When the Google algorithm scans Twitter it will often completely disregard usernames that have lots of numbers, since it’s more difficult to know if it’s a real account or a spammer.

Make sure your username is both unique and professional and ideally, that is matches your other online profiles.
